The 2018 UK Solar Power County Rankings ranks counties in Great Britain based on total installed solar capacity. It also includes rankings for domestic solar, commercial, and the penetration of solar in each county per 10,000 households. Find out where your county ranks and check out potential generation and income from solar in your area. We have included indicative figures for solar generation and income in each county but as always, if you want an accurate prediction of solar for your site, we suggest you contact local solar panel installers.
In general, the installation of solar panels in the UK has followed the sun. There is considerably more solar capacity in the South and less in Scotland. But this pattern is far from uniform.
As can be seen from the solar irradiation map above, energy available from the sun presents a much more uniform and predictable pattern than when we map installed solar capacity. The energy reaching ground level from the sun is greater further South, usually greater to the East than West and also greater in coastal areas than inland. The difference in irradiation from the sunniest areas in the South to the North of England or even Scotland is not as large as might be expected. You can see from the map above that there is a much wider gap in the amount of solar installed from South to North than there is in irradiation.
When we consider solar on a per 10,000 household basis, Scotland, Wales and the North of England all improve. There is still however considerable variation in how the amount of solar that has been installed matches up with the potential energy available from the sun.
It is also clear that solar success is patchy in the South of England, with installed solar in many counties not matching their potential.
Comparing the Top 10s
A quick look at the top 10s for installed solar and solar irradiation highlights a number of interesting details:
The county with the most solar is neither the sunniest nor the largest. Wiltshire has more solar installed than any other county and while it has decent sunshine, it doesn’t make the top 10 for solar irradiation.
The South West is predictably strong, with the only small surprise perhaps being its order.
Neither West Sussex nor East Sussex make the top 10. Despite some of the best sunshine in the UK.
Domestic solar shows more of a spread throughout the country than the overall capacity. With savings available on electricity bills and income from the Feed in Tariff, homeowners have taken up solar in locations all across the country.
Lincolnshire is in 2nd place for domestic capacity
When we consider domestic installations per 10,000 households the picture between counties levels out even more.
The number of domestic installations per 10,000 households sees top 10 placings for Scottish Borders (5th) and Northumberland (9th).
A higher percentage of homes in Powys, Northumberland or Scottish Borders have solar than in Sussex or Kent.
Several Welsh and even more surprisingly Scottish counties perform well for domestic installs per 10,000 households.
Overall, no county has achieved solar installs on even 7% of households (Cornwall is highest with 6.51%) which indicates considerable potential for further expansion if the finances make sense.
Solar is not just for the South.
The UK Solar Power County Rankings include predicted domestic savings and income averaged across a number of locations in each county. The predicted income / savings varied from £413 in Shetland to £655 in the Isle of Wight. While this range is quite wide, Shetland and the Isle of Wight really are the extremes.
In general, there is probably less of a difference in potential earnings North to South than might commonly be thought. As an example, our sample locations in Angus had a predicted income / savings figure of £538 per year. As with irradiation, this is obviously less than a southern county like Bedfordshire (£561 per year) but the gap is only £23 per year.
Aberdeenshire
Aberdeenshire ranks 53rd for solar capacity installed, with more solar installed than any other Scottish county. Domestic installations account for more than half of Aberdeenshire's installed capacity. Aberdeenshire's 43,174kW of solar is impressive given its northerly location. (Figures include Aberdeen).

Angus
Its East coast location means Angus receives surprisingly high amounts of solar energy (roughly in the middle for UK counties). Angus ranks just below Aberdeenshire for solar capacity despite more sun and better potential earnings. While domestic installations lag behind its larger, northern neighbour, Angus actually has more commercial capacity (29,000kW).

Greater London
London ranks 32nd for solar capacity and 12th for domestic capacity. The capital's position in the South East means high solar generating potential. With so many buildings, the penetration of domestic solar in the county (77th) is dissapointing but should be seen in the context of difficulties with shading and access.

Rutland
Rutland ranks bottom among the English counties for total installed capacity but that measure is perhaps a little unfair on such a small county. Rutland's solar story is far from being all bad news. The county ranks as high as 6th for domestic penetration (domestic installs per 10k households), which better reflects its potential in terms of solar energy.

Shetland
As the northern most part of the UK, Shetland is not a solar powerhouse. Contributing factors include its population, isolated location and limited energy from the sun. Nonetheless, some 49 enterprising homeowners have installed 177kW of solar panels.

With only 68MW of installed capacity, Tyne and Wear ranks 48th and is in the bottom 10 counties in England. This is perhaps not surprising, when considering the county's Northern location, small area and high population density. In fact, over 74% of Tyne and Wear's installed capacity is domestic and the county ranks 15th for domestic installs.

Methodology
Data in the Solar Power County Rankings is aggregated on a county by county basis from MCS and ROOFIT deployment figures published by BEIS, the Renewables & CHP register and the CFD register.
We have included indicative figures for solar irradiation and typical generation for each county. These are estimations gathered from PVGIS and averaged over a selection of locations for each county.
