In Northern Ireland, small scale renewable energy generation is supported via the Northern Ireland Renewables Obligation (NIRO). The NIRO allows businesses and householders to generate their own electricity. Based on the technology they use and the amount of energy they generate, they are issued Renewables Obligation Certificates (ROCs). These ROCs are then sold to generate income.
For renewable generators under 50kW, Power NI has a fixed price tariff scheme. Current rates are for the period 1st October 2013 to 31st September 2014.
Technology | Tariff p/kWh | |
---|---|---|
Solar PV | < 50kW | 16.96 |
